A Letter from Donna Truong ‘10

When I first heard about the women, peace and justice project, I was immediately attracted to the focus and took up a support role to help build up the project. It was both a learning experience and life-fulfilling, especially since  I would be working with student groups, departments, offices, professors – an entire campus – to collectively bring attention and action to social issues.

Back then, I did not know where it would lead, focusing more on the fact that it occupied me and allowed me to explore and further develop my organization and coordination skills. However through my time with the collaboration project, some key supporters, a curious mind and an adventurous heart, I became more and more invested in social justice.

In part, I credit my experience with the collaboration project for where I am today: a much stronger progressive working with one of the largest organizations in the US to train and support grassroots community organizations fighting for progressive social change and justice in their communities, movements and society. The collaboration project brought together a diverse group of people who took part and fought for justice in varied and beautiful ways. In ways that criticized contradictions, that confronted inaction, celebrated resiliency and united a campus for the common cause of human be-ing.

I am proud of what we did, what we do and what we work for, because I believe that no one group or individual can carry the work of broad-based social change and social justice.

Whether it comes to fighting for justice, or embracing human life, we must come together to collaborate and engage our world collectively. To create vision together, to build together, and to celebrate and love together.

Because this is our time, and as they say, there is no time like the present. Happy five year anniversary and thanks for allowing me to be here with you.
