The proliferation of fiber optic technology in industry has created a strong demand for professionals who are well-versed in fiber applications, installation and design.
Using fiber optics for communications enables companies to transmit telephone signals, Internet data and television signals more rapidly than traditional copper-based networks. As costs have reduced, fiber cable has become the preferred method to transfer digital data for both local and long distance purposes.
Beginning with a history of the development of fiber optics, you will gain insight into the role that fiber has provided, and will provide, in the global economy. Principles of fiber optic transmission and basic principles of light will be examined in detail as well as the theory behind optical fiber construction. Fiber characteristics will be reviewed as well as the function of transmitters, receivers, connectors, splicing techniques and the type of testing equipment used to guarantee an uninterrupted flow of light.
