Adelphi University Trustee Angela Jaggar ’62, M.A. ’65 and husband Scott Jaggar announce their commitment of $875,000 in support of the Community Fellows Program.

The Board of Trustees of Adelphi University is pleased to announce an $875,000 commitment from Trustee Angela Jaggar ’62, M.A. ’65 and her husband Scott in support of the Community Fellows Program. In recognition of their generosity and service to the University, Adelphi will rename the Community Fellows Program in the Jaggars’ honor.

Dr. Jaggar, who holds a Ph.D. in education from New York University, began her career as an elementary school teacher in Plainview, Long Island. She then entered the field of higher education, teaching and conducting research in children’s language and literacy development at New York University. During more than 30 years at NYU, she co-founded the University’s Reading Recovery Project, which she co-directed for 10 years. She has held numerous leadership roles in professional education associations throughout her career.

During World War II, Scott Jaggar trained at Yale University to be a Japanese interpreter with the U.S. Army Ground Forces. Following the war, Mr. Jaggar studied at the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.A. and M.A. in just three years. He became the National Systems and Data Processing Manager at United Parcel Service (UPS), where he worked for 30 years. Mr. Jaggar applied his management expertise when he served on President Reagan’s Grace Commission.

“I have had many opportunities to meet with Community Fellows who talk about the value of this experience in their lives,” said Adelphi University Trustee Angela Jaggar ’62, M.A. ’65. “I’ve also had the chance to speak with a number of executive directors who have said that their organizations have done things they would not have been able to do without our Adelphi students’ talents and skills. Hearing of the impact this program is having is our motivation to help sustain it.”

The Jaggars who are residents of Port Washington, NY have been actively involved in a number of not-for-profit organizations that serve children, education, and the arts. Dr. Jaggar has served on the Board of Directors of Port Washington’s historic community center, Landmark on Main Street. Elected to the Adelphi University Board of Trustees in 2008, Dr. Jaggar, who is currently on the Board of Directors of the Family and Children’s Association, has also provided her leadership to Belmont Child Care Association, Women on the Job and Literacy Volunteers of New York City. To further their support of those in need, the Jaggars established the Angela and Scott Jaggar Foundation.

Angela and Scott are members of the University’s Million Dollar Round Table and Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley Society, which recognizes those who have made provisions for the University in their estate plans.

The Jaggar Community Fellows Program, initiated by University President Dr. Robert A. Scott in 2010 as part of his vision for an engaged university, is the region’s only full-time, university-paid internship program. Participating students earn $10 an hour at nonprofit organizations in the greater New York area. The Jaggars’ most recent gift will increase the endowment for the Community Fellows Program and fund internships for the increasing number of students participating in the annual program.

Participation in the Jaggar Community Fellows Program by both students and nonprofits has more than tripled since its inception, with 70 students working at 60 different nonprofits in 2015. The growing list of participating nonprofits includes the Make-A-Wish Foundation, North Shore-LIJ Health System, Girl Scouts of Nassau County, and the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, to name a few.

Through this competitive summer program, the Jaggar Community Fellows Program offers students valuable training and experiential learning opportunities that will help them develop important leadership and professional skills needed to succeed after graduating. At the same time, the students provide their time and talents, helping to ensure that the nonprofits organizations with whom they work continue to thrive.

Adelphi honors the memory of Scott Jaggar, 1922-2017, and his contribution to our University.
