Fabiola Milord, D.D.S., M.P.H., F.A.G.D. to Receive Honorary Degree at Adelphi Commencement

Adelphi University will confer an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Fabiola Milord, D.D.S., M.P.H., F.A.G.D., dentist and clinical instructor in the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at New York University. Dr. Milord will receive the degree at Adelphi’s 118th Commencement on Monday, May 19, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY.

From infancy, Fabiola Milord was a world traveler. Born to Haitian parents in the Republic of Congo in Africa, Dr. Milord has lived in New York since she was one month old. A product of the New York City public school system, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from St. John’s University, followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from New York University College of Dentistry. She completed her General Practice Residency at Metropolitan Hospital Center and a Dental Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

As the former Dental Director for Catholic Charities Health Systems of the Diocese of Rockville Centre here on Long Island, Dr. Milord was responsible for making sure the oral health needs of vulnerable populations—especially those living with HIV/AIDS—were met. She sits on the New York State Dental Association’s Task Force on Public Health Dentistry & Access, where various strategies are employed to improve access to oral healthcare services to the state’s most at-risk residents. Through the National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH-NY) and Dorcas Medical Missions, she has taken part in more than 30 medical missions treating impoverished men, women and children with stunning levels of decay and tooth loss in countries such as Ghana, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, St. Lucia, St. Vincent’s and the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Inspired by her travels and the need to emphasize oral health as a basic human right, in May 2013, she completed a master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in global health at New York University, where she currently holds the position of Clinical Instructor at the College of Dentistry. Her master’s thesis involved traveling to Nepal, where she and her team were commissioned to conduct an assessment identifying existing services and remaining gaps in community needs to address violence against women in three districts in that country.

In 2008, she was awarded the Certificate of Recognition for Volunteer Service in a Foreign Country by the American Dental Association. Dr. Milord is also in private practice in Freeport, New York.

Before Catholic Charities Dental Clinic’s closure in November 2013, several Adelphi students volunteered there and each indicated what a wonderful experience it was. Dr. Milord is dedicated to being of service to others and exemplifies the characteristics we hope all of our pre-health career students—and all students—will manifest.
