Nirupam Sen, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1969, has since August 2004 been ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary and permanent representative of India to the United Nations. Earlier, Ambassador Sen was high commissioner of India in Sri Lanka. In addition, he has served as India's ambassador to Bulgaria and Norway in Sofia and Oslo, respectively, as well as deputy secretary in charge of East Europe and the Americas, and joint secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.
