Every two years, Adelphi University brings an outdoor sculpture exibition to its lovely campus. This collection of works creates an environment that is exciting, challenging, and even controversial. Adelphi is a university that prides itself on its commitment to the arts in all its diversity. President Robert Scott, the administration, and the faculty enthusiastically support this venture.
Art, by its very nature, can beautify and enrich our lives. Outdoor public sculpture is especially engaging, nestled as it is in splendid botanical surroundings. It confronts the viewer directly, away from the somewhat hermetic setting of the gallery with its pristine white walls. Outdoors, art can surprise us by its sudden appearance and, because it is so casually encountered, reach a large and heterogeneous audience.
The works speak for themselves and for the serious intent of the artists who made them. They employ diverse styles, approaches and materials, highlighting the variety inherent in contemporary art.
We hope that this ongoing exhibition is appreciated by Adelphi's students, faculty, and staff and by the community at large. Art is full of wonder. It touches us, moves us, and sometimes can even confuse and anger us. Good art is always potent, and brings joy to those who experience it.
