On the Third Anniversary of the Appointment of Adelphi's Board of Trustees, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy Presents the Board with $1 Million Technology Check
In her second visit to Adelphi University, Mrs. Clinton will address her position on New York State higher education issues.

Three years ago this week, a major event occurred in American higher education: the new Adelphi University Board of Trustees met for the first time, after its much publicized appointment by the New York State Board of Regents a week earlier.
Today, three years later, freshman and transfer admissions at Adelphi are dramatically increased; standards have risen significantly and, judging by the current applicant pool, are still rising; the University has initiated joint programs with nine local community colleges and expanded its academic programs with more than fifty local high schools; many refurbishments and improvements have altered the campus; and a $6 million technology plan is changing the face of the library, the science, art and computer labs, and the whole way information resources and teaching are delivered to students, on campus and off.
In this regard, at a luncheon with the Adelphi University Board of Trustees today, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy will present a facsimile check for $1 million to the University, representing a U.S. Department of Education technology grant that with her sponsorship was earmarked for Adelphi in this year's federal budget.
The $1 million funds Adelphi's comprehensive technology program, known as the Information Commons, which brings together campus computing, information and library resources, distance learning programs, and curriculum and teaching onto a web-based platform. These resources can be accessed by students in high-tech classroom facilities; from the library, student center, residence halls and elsewhere on campus; and from distant locations. The program will also be open in the future to local school districts and libraries, making available to them and to distance learning students the full information and teaching resources of the University. Eventually, most course sections at Adelphi will have a web-based information component, in which faculty can communicate with students outside classroom time, provide links to research and resources related to the class, review and discuss student work, and provide a bulletin board or chat area in which students can communicate about class work.
Said Congresswoman McCarthy today, "This project is a victory for the future education of Long Island and New York students. It is also a celebration of partnership between public, private and government sources who came together to find the funding for Adelphi's vision of education in the 21st century."
Steven L. Isenberg, Adelphi's interim president and the chair of the board that was originally named by the Regents, said today, in accepting the grant, "Adelphi is on a new course, with new energy and resolve. This Federal grant represents the public confidence that the University has been able to generate over three years of hard work and commitment to the values of education and community service."
Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Science, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
