Adelphi University board chairman Steven L. Isenberg today announced that Leon M. Pollack, former managing director of the investment firm Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and an Adelphi alumnus who received his bachelor's degree in history from Adelphi University's College of Arts and Sciences in 1963, has been named a trustee of Adelphi University. The board elected Pollack as a trustee on Monday, October 2, 2000, at its first full meeting of the 2000-2001 academic year.
Pollack went on in 1966 to earn an MA in education from New York University. He spent two years teaching social studies in the New York City public schools before entering the world of business. In all, he spent 33 years in the financial community, the last 13 as managing director of the investment firm of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Pollack and his wife, Marsha, are long-time supporters of and fundraisers for The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He also is a member of the board of trustees of the Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, a 73-year-old institution that annually serves more than 10,000 residents of the Bensonhurst, Brooklyn community. The Pollacks have two married daughters, Andrea and Robin, and two granddaughters.
"I am dedicated to the welfare of the University where I began my professional and intellectual life," Pollack said today. "My fondness for Adelphi and my interest in seeing it continue the great strides it has made as it enters a new century means a great deal to me. I am looking forward to being an active supporter and trustee."
In making today's announcement, Isenberg noted that, "Leon Pollack is the fifth Adelphi alumnus to join the board and one with an outstanding record both as a former teacher and as a highly successful figure in the world of business and finance. He is a friend to this University and other institutions of higher education and he will be a significant addition to what is an outstanding board of trustees, as it continues to grow."
Adelphi President Robert A. Scott said, "This Adelphi board, which has been the guiding force behind the transformation of Adelphi over the last four years, today is adding a distinguished alumnus and a committed educator to its ranks." He added, "Leon Pollack's experience, his energy and his deep affection for Adelphi make him an ideal candidate for a position in which he will bring great benefits to the University."
