The Board of Trustees elected two distinguished alumni, Robert Gary and the Honorable Joseph W. Westphal, to the Adelphi Board of Trustees on October 1, 2001.
Adelphi President Robert A. Scott states: "We are overjoyed with the selection of Robert Gary and the Dr. Joseph W. Westphal to the Board. These two well-known and highly respected alumni have made substantial contributions to their professions and communities. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their new appointments. We are lucky to have them."
Robert Gary recently retired as President of Allstate Property and Casualty Company in 1999, after an extraordinary career spanning over 37 years. Under his stewardship at the Company, Allstate grew and prospered as the nation's biggest publicly held personal lines insurance company. He is credited with building the largest and most successful franchise distribution systems in American business. Throughout his career, Mr. Gary has found time to be involved with civic and community affairs, including board positions with the National Commission Against Drunk Driving, Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Cuban American National Council, Chicago Crime Commission, and The Colorado Safety Council. He served as Chairman of the Board of the National Council of La Raz and the Denver Major League Baseball Committee.
Mr. Gary graduated from Adelphi University in 1961 where he earned a BBA in business administration. He was elected into the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976. At Adelphi, he set records in the high hurdles, low hurdles, high jump, and for the most points scored in a single track meet. In September 2000, he received the President's Award for Outstanding Achievement and Friendship at Adelphi's annual golf classic, which raised over $70,000 for the University.
Honorable Joseph W. Westphal, Ph.D., is a Partner and a Senior Policy Counselor at Patton Boggs LLP in Washington, DC. Before joining Patton Boggs, Dr. Westphal was the Acting Secretary of the Army, where he was responsible for all matters relating to the Army, including overseeing the Army's annual budget of nearly $70 billion. Prior to this position, he was the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), a position he held since 1998. From 1988 to 1998, he worked on Capitol Hill for both the Senate and House of Representatives and served in the Carter and Reagan administrations. He has more than ten years of legislative experience, serving as senior policy adviser to Senator Thad Cochran, Executive Director of the Congressional Sunbelt Caucus, and policy analyst on the House Committee on the Budget.
After receiving a BA in political science from Adelphi in 1970, he earned a MA from Oklahoma University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He spent twelve years as a professor and then Head of the Political Science Department at Oklahoma State University. His many years of experience in university teaching, research, and administration, together with his experience in federal grants, have given him a strong perspective on education and the needs of higher education institutions today.
