Adelphi University to Open Campus to Benefit the American Heart Association
Public garden tours part of a community fund-raising effort

Garden City, NY
October 3, 2001

Faculty, students, staff, and alumni from Adelphi are teaming up for the American Heart Association by offering guided tours of the gardens of the University's campus on Saturday, October 10, 2001. A choice of two start times for the walking tour is available: 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM. A donation of $5 per person will be collected. For more information, call Mary Ann Mearini at 516.877.3265 or Kathleen Watchorn at 516.877.3683.

The public will get a close-up look at the abundant trees and shrubs that adorn the Adelphi campus. The walk will feature a memorial bird garden with special berry bushes, a lavish rose garden, and trees such as Golden Cyprus and California Redwood that date back to the early twentieth century.

"We've also planted 400 trees and thousands of varied shrubs in the past five years, adding to the richness of our grounds," said Bob Conaghan, grounds manager at Adelphi. Mr. Conaghan will serve as tour guide along with Kevin Malone, a horticulturist, and Dana Murch, an arborist, both from LandTek/Mike Ryan Tree Service. They will provide informative discussions, planting and pruning tips, and more.

The American HeartWalk team at Adelphi is the organizing group behind the tours. "Our HeartWalk team has raised over a thousand dollars so far from various activities. The goal is $10,000, and we hope these special tours of the beautiful botanical bounty on our campus will be a big step in that direction," said Kathleen Watchorn, who works in Adelphi's Office of Enrollment Managament and Student Affairs and is the spokesperson for the University's HeartWalk team. The garden tours are part of a series of events (called "Straight to the Heart") put together by Adelphi's American HeartWalk Team and benefiting The American Heart Association.

The effort culminates with a five-mile non-competitive walk on Long Island - the American Heart Association's annual HeartWalk - to be held Oct. 21, 2001. The American Heart Association will donate a quarter million dollars of HeartWalk proceeds nationwide to the 911 Disaster Relief Fund for victims of the Word Trade Center attack.

The American HeartWalk is an annual fund-raiser organized by the American Heart Association in locales around the country. Business, nonprofit, and education groups are encouraged to enter teams and collect sponsors for the walk. The Adelphi University team has taken the initiative to sponsor additional fund-raising activities. In addition to the October 10 botanical garden tour, the team has organized bake sales, raffles, T-shirt sales, and a music festival on campus.
