Adelphi University Presents "The President's Series on Critical Issues"

Dr. Robert A. Scott is pleased to introduce The President's Series on Critical Issues at Adelphi University. The breakfast series provides students, scholars, and distinguished guests with a forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national, and global topics, such as the environment, health, politics, law, and government regulations. The spring 2002 series will feature three leading elected officials: Senator Carl L. Marcellino, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and Senator Stephen Saland. The presentations will begin at 8:00 AM in Adelphi's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. These events are open to the public but reservations are required. Senator Carl Louis Marcellino was elected to represent the Fifth Senate District on March 14, 1995. In December 1995, Senator Marcellino was named Chairman of the New York State Senate Environmental Conservation Committee and has since compiled an outstanding record of innovative legislation covering a broad range of issues. Senator Marcellino's legislative record touches on issues directly impacting residents throughout New York State. As Environmental Conservation Committee Chairman, environmental legislation continues to be one of Senator Marcellino's highest priorities. The 1999-2000 Legislative Session was one of the Senator's most prolific periods of environmental legislative accomplishment culminating with his selection as "Conservationist of the Year," by the Adirondack Council.
In addition to his legislative agenda, Senator Marcellino has been instrumental in implementing important environmental benefits for his Senate District. Obtaining state funding to purchase and make accessible five acres of waterfront property in the Town of Oyster Bay and the designation of Huntington and Lloyd Harbors as no-discharge zones were both Marcellino initiatives. Senator Marcellino has also held public hearings in Huntington and Oyster Bay on issues of local concern such as tidal surges resulting from storms and hurricanes, petroleum spills from underground tanks and fluid leaks from Long Island Sound electric cables.
Dr. Robert A. Scott has been president, chief executive officer, and professor of anthropology and sociology at Adelphi University since July 2000, bringing to the century-old liberal arts and professional programs of Adelphi a modern philosophy of engagement with businesses, communities, civic groups, schools, and non-governmental international organizations, thus enriching the University's opportunities for teaching, learning and service, both on the campus and off.
