Prof. Lawrence Hobbie Awarded Fulbright and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique Grants
He will spend the next year conducting research in France

Garden City, NY
May 2, 2002

Dr. Lawrence Hobbie, associate professor of Biology at Adelphi University, has been awarded a grant by the prestigious national Fulbright Program and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research) (CNRS).
Dr. Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University, states, "We are pleased for Dr. Hobbie and grateful for all he does for Adelphi. His commitments to research and teaching are outstanding. These two grants are richly deserved and his is our third Fulbright award this year."
Prof. Hobbie will spend a year sabbatical conducting research in France. His research focuses on plant signaling pathways. He will be working in the lab of Dr. Catherine Perrot-Rechenmann, a leader in the field, at the Institute of Plant Sciences in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Dr. Hobbie will receive five months of support as a Fulbright Scholar and six months of support from the French government research organization, the Centre National de la Recherche Scienfitique.
Prof. Hobbie states: "I feel very honored to have been chosen for these awards. I'm looking forward to a scientifically rewarding and culturally enriching year in France."
Prof. Hobbie's research, currently supported by a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation, focuses on plant developmental genetics. He is interested in identifying and understanding the function of genes that control plant growth and development, particularly those that act through the important plant hormone auxin.
Prof. Hobbie believes that lab research is a valuable learning experience for the undergraduates and master's students in biology programs at Adelphi. He currently has five undergraduate and two graduate students working in his lab. He also mentored one High School Intel Science finalist and two semi-finalists this year.
He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University and doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a resident of Plainview, NY.
