Garden City, NY
May 6, 2002

On April 15, 2002, Adelphi University gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of its dearest friends, Ruth S. Harley. At the celebration, friends and family shared memories of Ruth through her many decades at Adelphi. Her birthday is May 21.

Dr. Robert A. Scott, President of Adelphi, and Ruth Harley
Ruth S. Harley was a student at Adelphi College in Brooklyn from 1920-1924 at a time when few women attended college. As a student Dean Harley was a member of Delta Delta Delta, played on the women's basketball team, was treasurer and the president of the Student Government Association, and the art editor of the Oracle. Upon graduation, Ruth became the University Registrar, and then the Dean of Women in 1942, and until her retirement in the early 1970's, she was the Dean of Students. She now serves on the Alumni Association Steering Committee, the President's Advisory Council, and is involved in numerous other community clubs and organizations.

When former students are asked to reflect on their experience at Adelphi with Dean Harley, her concern, humanity and good humor are frequently cited as most significant. In recognition of her extraordinary accomplishment and dedication to Adelphi University, Ruth Harley was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1950 and designated Dean Emeritus in 1970. Two years later in 1972, Adelphi dedicated the Ruth S. Harley University Center in her honor.

Ruth Harley continues to lead a very active professional, social and personal life. Her hobbies include jewelry making, crocheting, gardening and travel. She is currently an active member of The Friends of the Adelphi Library; Zonta International; the Silversmithing Committee of the Community Club of Garden City and the Church in the Garden of Garden City.

And so Adelphi University celebrates Ruth Harley for her strength, kindness and leadership.
