Ground Breaking for New Residence Hall on June 1, 2002
The first new construction in more than 17 years

Garden City, NY
May 30, 2002

A new $14 million, 180-bed residence hall will be erected on the western side of the Garden City campus, President Robert A. Scott announced recently. A ceremonial ground breaking will be held during Reunion Weekend on June 1, 2002 at 11:30 a.m

President Robert A. Scott states: "The new residence hall will help Adelphi continue to attract and retain high caliber students who have their choice of quality schools. Students are interested in a full college experience and living on campus is part of that."

The building, which is scheduled to open in August 2003, is the University's latest response to an increased demand for on-campus housing by its students.

This is the first new construction in more than 17 years on the campus, and it will complement the existing quality architecture at Adelphi. The prominent architectural firm of Fletcher-Thompson, whose credits include the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point and Fairfield University, has designed the proposed hall. Damon G. Douglas Company, a highly experienced Construction Manager, will start construction in June.

The building is responsive to several needs that differentiate it from the standard residence hall. Creative room configurations and a large meeting space will make the hall attractive to students, conference groups, and others. In addition, the lower level will provide room for expanded library archives.

The building is planned on the model of a hotel, with every student room (whether designed for one, two or three students) equipped with a private bathroom. Each floor will have a shared commons room. The ground floor commons room is large enough to accommodate a meeting of all the resident students as well as functioning as a social gathering space. In addition, an outdoor terrace extends out from an operable glass wall and can accommodate a much larger gathering in good weather. It can also become a teaching space with a built-in media console.

Architecturally, the neo-classical Georgian buildings by Mckim, Mead, and White of brick with limestone quoins and trim, sloped roofs, white sash and multi-paned windows have set the palette and scale for the new residence hall. The new three-story building will be clad in brick with sloped roofs, limestone accents, and white sash for the windows to echo the materials, color palette, and scale of the original campus buildings, while the form is a reflection of the new program and modern technology.

The courtyard will be generously landscaped as a garden with planters, flowering shrubs, and ornamental trees bordering the walkways
