Prof. Richard Lund supervised Laura Mulvey, a H. S. sophomore

Garden City, NY
May 30, 2002

Laura Mulvey, sophomore at Carle Place High School, earned the right to compete at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). Intel ISEF is the Olympics, the World Cup and the World Series of science competitions. It brings together over 1,200 students from 48 states and 40 nations to compete for scholarships, tuition grants, internships, and scientific field trips

Professor Richard Lund mentored Laura Mulvey on her science project entitled "Microstructure of the Shark's Jaw". The project successfully solved the engineering/architectural problems of determining how the internal skeletons of sharks, composed principally of cartilage with a thick skin of tile like mineralizations could be so strong. She received an honorable mention award at the prestigious, international competition held May 16, 2002 in Louisville, Kentucky
