Adelphi University Faculty and Students Visits National Leaders in Washington
They met with Representatives and Senators from N.Y.

Garden City, NY
May 30, 2002

On May 8, 2002, three Adelphi University faculty (Professors Regina Axelrod, Katie Laatikainen and Leonisa Ardizzone) and five students (Gregory Atherton, Letisah Miller, Kiandra McDonald, Rebecca Grabina and Tom Westerman) visited Washington, D.C. on a trip organized by the Long Island Foreign Affairs Forum. Adelphi President Robert A. Scott, a member of the L.I. Foreign Affairs Forum, sponsored the group.

The group, along with 50 other Long Islanders, visited with members of the House and Senate including local Representatives Peter King, Gary Ackerman, and Steve Israel. Over a box lunch, Senators Clinton, Nelson, McCain, McConnel and Bagh, and House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt each spoke and took questions. Most of the discussion focused on Middle East issues.

Later in the day, Richard Haass, Director of Policy and Planning, and Douglas Feith, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, spoke to the group about the war on terrorism.

Adelphi faculty and students enjoyed the close-up view of the Capital. Adelphi student Gregory J. Atherton stated: "Throughout the trip I did not feel like a tourist, as I was not merely looking at monuments and buildings, but actually meeting the main players of government."
