Adelphi University Trustees Name Business Leader, Steven N. Fischer, New Chair of Board
Philip Steele Winterer Elected New Vice Chair

The Adelphi University Board of Trustees has announced the election of new officers. Steven N. Fischer is the new Chairman of the Board, Philip Steele Winterer is the new Vice Chair, and William A. Ackerman has been re-elected as Secretary.
Michael Finnerty and Jill Ker Conway have served as Chair and Vice Chair and will leave the board, along with Trustees Barbara T. Barrantes and Shirley M. Malcolm, after five-and-one-half years of service. Each was appointed by the New York State Board of Regents in February 1997 and re-elected by the board in June 1999.
Adelphi's president, Dr. Robert A. Scott, commented: "We are extremely grateful to Mike Finnerty, Jill Ker Conway, Barbara Barrantes, and Shirley Malcolm for their wisdom and thoughtful guidance to Adelphi during an important period of turnaround over the past five-and-a-half years. They have set a remarkable standard of achievement. Steve Fischer, together with Phil Winterer and Bill Ackerman, will provide exceptional leadership for the years ahead. They are capable and experienced board members with great affection for Adelphi."
Steven N. Fischer is a Certified Public Accountant and attorney. He is President of Urbach Kahn & Werlin Advisors, Inc. and Managing Partner of Urbach Kahn & Werlin LLP. Fischer brings a broad range of knowledge and experience to his new appointment. As an Adelphi Trustee since 1997, Fischer has served as co-chair of the finance committee and a member of the development, executive, investment and legal review committees. He received his BBA from City College of New York and JD from New York University School of Law.
Regarding his appointment, Fischer stated, "I am pleased and proud to serve as the University's chairman as Adelphi enters an exciting era of growth under the leadership of Dr. Robert Scott. Adelphi University is a great institution with a firm commitment to excellence in education."
Philip Steele Winterer is a former partner of Debevoise & Plimpton, one of New York's leading law firms. He has been a board member since 1997 and was the director of American Savings Bank from 1972-1992. Winterer is a trustee of Amherst College, where he received a medal for Eminent Service in 1980. He received his BA from Amherst College and LLB from Harvard University.
William A. Ackerman is a partner in the firm of Ackerman, Levine, Cullen and Brickman in Great Neck, New York. He has served as counsel to the majority leader of the New York State Senate and is an active member of numerous committees and boards serving the Long Island community. He received a BA degree from the University of Vermont and LLB from the New York University School of Law.
