South Side High School Student Takes First Prize in Congressional Art Competition
Katherine Banks wins a $7,000 art scholarship to Adelphi

Katherine Banks from South Side High School in Rockville Centre took home the First Prize Award for Excellence in the Fourth Congressional District's Annual Congressional High School Art Competition for her piece "2067 Roses." Her prize is a $7,000 art scholarship to Adelphi University and her work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. A reception took place on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the Adelphi University Art Gallery.

The Congressional Art Competition is an annual competition open to all high school students who reside in the Fourth Congressional District. The second prize, the Award of Merit, is a $5,000 scholarship to study Art or Art History at Adelphi, and third prize, the Award of Achievement, is a $3,000 scholarship to study art or art history at Adelphi.

The winners are as follows:
  • Second Prize: Jeanne Castel, Garden City High School, for "Tranquil Autumn"
  • Second Prize: Jan Cuyan, Lawrence High School, for "Apt. II"
  • Third Prize: Nayelli Calle, Mineola High School, for "Self Portrait"
  • Third Prize: Julia Sokolov, GW Hewlett High School, for "Double Exposure"
  • Third Prize: Alexander Solounias, Uniondale High School, for "Guiltiness of War and Blood"
