Adelphi University Gallery Presents Paintings and Sculptures by Julie Small-Gamby
"It Never Entered My Thoughts" opens November 3

Garden City, NY
August 28, 2002

Adelphi University is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the paintings and sculptures of Julie Small-Gamby. The exhibit, which provides an overview of the artist's work from the mid-1980s to the present, will be on view from November 3 to December 4, 2002 at the University Center Gallery with a reception at the Adelphi University Center Gallery on Sunday November 3 at 1:00 PM Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday (8:00 AM to 7:00 PM) For more information about either exhibit, contact Richard Vaux in the Department of Art and Art History at 516.877.4460.
In both her sculptures and paintings, Small-Gamby explores non-traditional ways of using materials and, in creating many of the sculptures, which are installed on the wall and floor and suspended from the ceiling of the University's principal gallery, the artist applies a skin of wax to the surfaces of biomorphic forms made of wire screen, revealing their texture and colors. As Simon Taylor, curator of Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, N.Y. says in the accompanying catalog essay, "there is an element of understatement in her work that verges on the spectral and evanescent."
Continuing to be attracted to the physicality of materials, Small-Gamby investigates cardboard as a surface for mixed-media paintings. Using oil paint, oil stick, beeswax, graphite and ballpoint pen, she integrates the cardboard's irregularities, marks and stains. According to Taylor, " the process of (Small-Gamby's) art is her manifest subject matter. It is an art that strives to be literal, to be strictly about painting, drawing, smearing, scribbling, rubbing- as well as the properties of the materials employed."
