Frederic Salerno, MBA '68, to Give Matriculation Day Address
Salerno to speak about "Business Ethics"

Prominent alumnus Frederic V. Salerno, Vice Chairman of Verizon Communications Inc., will speak on "Business Ethics" at Adelphi's Matriculation Day, September 3, 2002, at 1:00 PM. Mr. Salerno was Verizon's Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer from the time the company was formed in June 2000 until April 2002, when he announced his intention to retire from the Company after 37 years of service with Verizon and its predecessor companies. During the ceremony, President Robert A. Scott will present Mr. Salerno with a President's Service Medal. Frederic V. Salerno, Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Verizon Communications, served as a lead negotiator in three of the most significant mergers in business history: the merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX, of Bell Atlantic and GTE, and of the US wireless assets of Bell Atlantic and Vodafone into Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless provider in the nation. He also is recognized for his financial leadership in monetizing assets through the use of exchangeable notes.

During his distinguished career, Mr. Salerno has served as vice chairman and CFO of Bell Atlantic, vice chairman of finance and business development at NYNEX, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of New York Telephone, and executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) of New England Telephone. He is a member of numerous boards, including those of AVNET, Inc., Akamai Technologies, Bear Stearns Company, Inc., Consolidated Edison, Inc., Viacom, Inc., and Manhattan College.

A native New Yorker who is an active participant in community and educational initiatives, Mr. Salerno is currently a trustee of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund and a member of New York State's International Business Development Council. He has served as chairman of the board of trustees of the State University of New York, chairman of the Archdiocese of New York's Partnership for Quality Education Campaign, and chairman of New York's Temporary State Commission on the Distribution of State Aid to Local School Districts. A member of the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta and a recipient of the National Italian American Foundation's Special Achievement Award for Humanitarian Service, Mr. Salerno earned a Bachelor of Science (electrical engineering) degree from Manhattan College and a Master of Business Administration degree from Adelphi University.
