Garden City, NY
September 5, 2002

Prominent alumnus Frederic V. Salerno, Vice Chairman of Verizon Communications Inc., delivered a speech on "Business Ethics" at Adelphi's Matriculation Day on Tuesday. Mr. Salerno was Verizon's Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer from the time the company was formed in June 2000 until April 2002, when he announced his intention to retire from the Company after 37 years of service with Verizon and its predecessor companies. During the ceremony, President Robert A. Scott presented Mr. Salerno with a President's Service Medal. Matriculation Day formally welcomes new students to the community of scholars at Adelphi University. For more information, please call 516.877.3697.

A native New Yorker who received a Masters of Business Administration degree from Adelphi while working full-time and raising a family, Mr. Salerno was happy to return to his alma mater to collect the President's Award of Merit from Dr. Scott. His speech to a crowd of some 400 students focused on the "moral compass" required for the years ahead, with an expert's insight into the ethical lapses that have plagued American business in recent months.

A raucous crowd of Adelphi students saw Dr. Marcia G. Welsh, the University Provost, present the Honor Code to the student community. President Scott, in presenting the President's Award to Mr. Salerno, urged the students to heed the guest speaker's words and think "not just about careers and commerce, but about character and citizenship."
