Adelphi University to Present Conference Exploring Images of Catholicism in Italian-American Life
Nassau Community College and Stony Brook University to co-present this three-institution conference

Adelphi University is pleased to present a three-day, three-institution conference to explore "Images and Models of Catholicism in Italian-Americana: Academy and Society" on October 4th, 5th and 6th in partnership with Nassau Community College and Stony Brook University. Sponsored by the Provost's Office of Adelphi University, the Center for Catholic Studies and the Center for Italian-American Studies at Nassau Community College, the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University, and the Order of the Sons of Italy, the event is free and open to the public

This wide-ranging exploration of how Catholicism is central to both the Italian and Italian-American experience, begins with a reception at 7:00 p.m. in the Alumni House (154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, New York 11530) on Friday October 4th. "The Welcoming Remarks and Overview of Conference" by Adelphi Sociology Professor Salvatore Primeggia are followed by a scholarly exploration of, respectively, Irish-Italian religious attitudes and practices and Irish-Italian religious interaction. "A Comparison of the Attitudes and Practices of Irish American and Italian American Catholics" by Louis Gesualdi of St John's University precedes "Irish American and Italian American Religious Interaction: Another Look" by Salvatore J. LaGumina of Nassau Community College, and "Catholicism Italian Style: One Defense of Religious and Cultural Pluralism" by Joseph A. Varacalli of Villanova University

The conference proceeds on Saturday October 5th at Nassau Community College at the College Center Building (Rooms 252-3, Garden City, New York, 11530) where Dr. Primeggia, Dr. Richard Juliani, and Sister Mary Louise Sullivan will focus on the ever-changing nature of Italian-American religiosity, and the Church's quest to use self-understanding in helping the Italian Catholic, body and soul

The conference concludes with a morning of activities sponsored by the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University at the campus Student Activity Center (Melville Library, Stony Brook, NY 11794) on Sunday October 6th. There will be four presentations by distinguished Catholic scholars as follows: Dr. Michael P. Carroll of the University of Western Ontario discusses the psychoanalytical understanding of Italian Catholic religiosity; Dr. Mary Jo Bona of Stony Brook offers a discussion of Italian-American anti-clerical women and the feminist response to the Church; Dr Frank Salamone of Iona offers the Protestant rejection of Italian-American Catholic paganism, and finally, Dr. Fred Gardaphe of Stony Brook presents a discussion of Catholic images in Italian American literature
