Rockville Centre's most influential politician and deputy leader of the Senate's Republican majority, Senator Skelos, spoke to over 50 guests at Adelphi University on September 12, 2002 from 8:00 - 9:30 AM. Senator Skelos was the first guest lecturer for The President's Series on Critical Issues. The lecture and discussion entitled "Partnerships for Job Creation" focused on the importance of business collaborations and identified state government partnering with local academic institutions as one of the key initiatives to grow local business. He discussed the growth of biotechnology on Long Island and emphasized the importance of promoting science education from the earliest level to meet the needs of these companies.

Senator Dean G. Skelos, currently serving his ninth term in the New York State Senate, represents New York's 9th Senatorial District (southwestern Nassau County). As Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Skelos plays a central role in developing the Senate's legislative agenda and governmental policy. Throughout his tenure, Senator Skelos has been involved with many of the State's most important issues. Specifically, he authored Megan's Law and legislation establishing the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) program. Moreover, he led the Senate's efforts during the redistricting process, sits on the MTA's four-member Capital Program Review Board and was a key figure in the creation of the nation's first full tax deduction for college tuition expenses.

The President's Series on Critical Issues at Adelphi University provides students, scholars, and distinguished guests with a forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national, and global topics, such as the environment, health, politics, law, and government regulations. The fall 2002 series features three leading elected officials: Senator Dean G. Skelos, Senator Kemp Hannon and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi. The presentations will begin at 8:00 A.M. in Adelphi's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. These events are open to the public but reservations are required. Contact the Office of University Advancement at 516.877.3697 for more information. A light breakfast will be served.
