Adelphi University Announces Appointment of Renowned Author Jennifer Fleischner as Chair of English
Prolific author Fleischner brings a diverse range of achievements to Adelphi

Adelphi University is pleased to announce the appointment of Jennifer Fleischner as Full Professor and Chair of English, based in the College of Arts and Sciences on the principal campus.
Provost Marcia Grosse Welsh states: "Jennifer Fleischner is an academic leader of exceptional achievement and an outstanding addition to the Adelphi community. Her scholarship is nationally recognized, with two important books published by the distinguished NYU Press, and a third in the final stages of editing at Doubleday. We look forward to her leadership as the new Chair of the Department of English."
Jennifer Fleischner has been a prolific author and brings a diverse range of achievements to Adelphi. She received a B.A. cum laude from Williams College (1977), a M.A. (highest honors, 1980) and M.Phil. (with distinction, 1983), and a Ph.D. from Columbia (1988). With diverse scholarship in her New York background, she attended the Training Institute of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis between 1990 and 1992 and studied at Columbia University's Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research from 1992 to 1994. Most recently, she was Associate Professor in the Department of English at the State University of New York at Albany, where she had taught since 1986. Between 1996 and 2000 Professor Fleischner served as Director of Undergraduate Studies at SUNY, Albany and from 1997 to 1999 was Director of its Honors Program.
A prolific Manhattan-based author, Dr. Fleischner's book, Mastering Slavery: Memory, Family and Identity in Women's Slave Narratives (New York University Press, 1996), was a breakthrough book in 1998. Her current book project will explore the relationship between Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Keckley, a former slave who worked for Mrs. Lincoln in the White House and whose knowledge of family life in the Lincoln White House was unrivaled. In addition to being Managing Editor of MacMillan's Reading Theme Book Series, Professor Fleischner is the author of four history books for children.
