Garden City, NY
September 19, 2002

Adelphi University is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephanie T. Lake as Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Sociology. Dr. Lake has been given special responsibility to initiate the new Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration program, as Adelphi becomes the only college on Long Island to offer one of the nation's fastest-growing majors, a broad-based social science examining crime, the criminal justice system and related social issues.

Provost Dr. Marcia Grosse Welsh states: "We have seen the attention given recently to the role of local law enforcement officials on national security issues; as a community, we need law enforcement personnel who are well versed in the complexities that can be learned in a criminal justice program."

Professor Lake is the perfect choice to provide students with a solid foundation in criminal justice administration while emphasizing, as the university always does, a strong concentration in the humanities and social sciences. She returns to her native Long Island with vast experience, including a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Washington and Lee University (1989) a M.A. (1995) and Ph.D. (2001) degrees from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Her areas of specialization are criminal justice, gender, the family, and juvenile delinquency.

Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, is the first liberal arts institution of higher education on Long Island. Through its seven degree-granting academic units (School of Nursing, School of Social Work, Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Honors, College of Arts & Sciences, School of Education and School of Business, ) the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional degrees and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and off campus centers in Manhattan (NYC), Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a practical commitment to liberal arts in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
