Adelphi University's Jerry March Memorial Lecture Presents Dr. Roald Hoffmann
Celebrated author and Nobel Prize winner speaks on "Molecular Beauty"

Garden City, NY
September 25, 2002

Adelphi University is pleased to present the annual Jerry March Memorial Lecture, to be delivered this year by Roald Hoffmann, the celebrated author and Cornell University's Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters and Professor of Chemistry, on Monday October 7th. Sponsored by the Adelphi University International Initiatives Committee, Dr. Hoffmann will speak on "Molecular Beauty," beginning at 8:00 PM in Alumni House (154 Cambridge Avenue). The lecture is free and open to the public.

The distinguished author will also be present for a conversation and literary reading entitled "The Same and Not the Same," co-sponsored by the Departments of Chemistry and English and The Honors College at the Honors College Lounge in Earle Hall on the same day at 1:00 PM, and the English Department (Harvey Hall 201) will be showing samples of Dr. Hoffmann's wide-ranging popular writing for Adelphi students and others interested in getting to know his versatile range better during the next two weeks.

Roald Hoffmann shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981 with Kenichi Fukui, and has won fame for communicating science to non-scientists as an accomplished poet and writer. He published two popular-scientific books: Chemistry Imagined: Reflections on Science (1993) and The Same and Not The Same (1995). In 1993 Hoffmann hosted a 26-part documentary entitled "The World of Chemistry" on the Public Broadcasting Service.

He is currently Cornell University's Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters and Professor of Chemistry, specializing in applied theoretical chemistry, and his versatility is shown in his being the only person to receive the American Chemical Society's awards in three different subfields of chemistry: the A.C. Cope Award in Organic Chemistry, the Award in Inorganic Chemistry, and the Pimentel Award in Chemical Education.

Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island.
