President's Award for Excellence in Service Revived after Long Absence
Adelphi honors four employees with a combined 78 years of full-time service

Garden City, NY
September 26, 2002

President Robert A. Scott hosted a reception in honor of recipients of the recently revived President's Award for Excellence in Service at a reception in the University Center on Tuesday, September 17.

The awards were revived by Dr. Scott after a long hiatus to honor four individuals with a combined seventy-eight years of full-time service to the Adelphi community.

Denise Bynes, the Co-ordinator of the African American Students' Program, like the other honorees, took advantage of the internal professional development opportunities offered by Adelphi when she was appointed as a secretary in the School of Social Work. Since becoming an administrator in the Center for African American Studies Programs (CAASP) she has been involved in many community organizations in her native Westbury such that, observed Dr. Scott, "she has enabled Adelphi to be a recognized contributor to this effort," and in bringing large numbers of adolescents from the community to campus as she promotes the benefits of higher education."

Enrique Acosta, the Leadman of Carpentry Mechanics, Physical Plant, is from Freeport, New York, and has been at Adelphi for sixteen years, providing service both to the Garden City campus and the Manhattan Center. Dr. Scott states: "Mr. Acosta's sixteen-year journey at Adelphi, from custodian to lead man of carpentry mechanics in the Physical Plant, has been characterized by his professional and self-improvement efforts," because of the extraordinary lengths to which he has gone to amass new diplomas and certificates.

Pedro Guzman is the Custodian, Housekeeping, of Rockville Centre, New York, and has provided cleaning and custodial services in both academic and residential University buildings for fifteen years, and was cited by a group of international students for his special efforts on their behalf in providing comfort as they adapted to residential life so far from home.

Dr. Ruth McShane, of Hicksville, New York, has an illustrious Adelphi history stemming from when she was an undergraduate student in 1957 among some of Adelphi's most famous educators, and has since earned three degrees. To her B.S. in 1961 she has added an MBA in 1985 and a Ph.D. in 1997 while working for twenty-three years as a full-time staff member, and is very active in the recruitment of new students to the university she treasures. Her current title is Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, but students have known her in so many different segments of Adelphi life that she is the perfect recipient for awards that Dr. Scott expects to recognize staff excellence again.

Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Science, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
