The Metropolitan Museum of Art is offering an exhibition paying tribute to "Theodore Chasseriau, 1819-1856: The Unknown Romantic" (October 22 through January 5, 2003), and so the Friends of the Adelphi University Library sought an expert to elucidate these works for the Friends' 55th year of providing a medium through which the Long Island community might share its enthusiasm for art. Though born in Santo Domingo, Chasseriau was a French painter who successfully fused Romantic and classical ideals. A precocious disciple of Ingres whom he follows to Rome, Chasseriau quickly succumbed to the influence of Delacroix. His travels to Algeria during his short career inspired a wealth of exotic images, painted in a freer, more colorful style. This slide-illustrated lecture at Adelphi will explore many of his paintings and drawings, including historical, religious and mythological subjects as well as portraits and nudes.
Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries.
