Adelphi University to Open Campus to Benefit the American Heart Association
Public garden tours part of a community fund-raising effort

Garden City, NY
October 10, 2002

Faculty, students, staff, and alumni from Adelphi are teaming up for the American Heart Association by offering guided tours of the gardens of the University's campus on Wednesday, October 30, 2002. Two start times for the walking tour are available: 12:00 noon and 1:00 PM. A donation of $5 per person will be collected. For more information, call Mary Ann Mearini at 516.877.3265 or Kathleen Watchorn at 516.877.3683.

The public will get a close-up look at the abundant trees and shrubs that adorn the Adelphi campus. The guided walk — “Botany Straight to ther Heart” Tour — will feature a memorial bird garden with special berry bushes, a lavish rose garden, and trees such as Golden Cyprus and California Redwood that date back to the early twentieth century. Tips on ‘Putting your plants to bed for the winter’ will be provided.

Other Fund Raising Efforts For 2002...
The American HeartWalk team at Adelphi is the organizing group behind the tours. The garden tours are part of a series of events (called "Straight to the Heart") put together by Adelphi's American HeartWalk Team and benefiting The American Heart Association. In an effort to surpass last years fund raising efforts, this year's goal has been set at over $6,000. Our HeartWalk team has raised close to two thousand dollars from various activities so far, which exceeds the amount collected last year at this time.

In addition to the October 16 botanical garden tour, the team has organized bake sales, raffles, T-shirt sales, and an on campus music festival. As a result of "Music Straight to the Heart," the music festival held at Adelphi on October 2nd, the HeartWalk Team raised $1,700 from the music festival donations and raffles sold at the event. Video tapes from the music festival, which was held on October 2nd, will be made available in November for $7.00. All proceeds from the sale of videos will go to the American Heart Association as well. Orders for video tapes can be made by calling Mary Ann Mearini at 516.877.3250.

The Main Event...
Fund raising efforts for 2002 culminate with a 5K non-competitive walk on Long Island - American Heart Association's 2002 Long Island American HeartWalk - to be held Oct. 27, 2002 starting at 11:00 AM. This 5K (3,2 mile) walk, set in Nassau Community College's beautiful campus, will welcome strollers, wheelchairs and well behaved dogs. Lunch is at 12:00 noon and the walk will be preceded with a health fair at 9:00 AM. To register, visit the official web site.

The American HeartWalk is an annual fund-raiser organized by the American Heart Association in locales around the country. Business, nonprofit, and education groups are encouraged to enter teams and collect sponsors for the walk. The Adelphi University team has taken the initiative to sponsor additional fund-raising activities.
