Four New Members to Join Adelphi University's Board of Trustees
AU continues its efforts to form a team whose members are highly accomplished in areas of strategic importance to the University

The Adelphi University Board of Trustees elected four new members at its annual fall meeting on October 7, 2002: Dolores E. Cross, nationally acclaimed educator; Joan S. Girgus, professor and former dean at Princeton University; John J. Gutleber BBA ’68, MBA ’70, president and chief executive officer of Castagna Realty; and Kenneth A. McClane, Jr., W.E.B DuBois Professor of Literature at Cornell University.

Board Chairman Steven N. Fischer reported: "This is a remarkable class of trustees who will bring great wisdom and experience to our deliberations." President Robert A. Scott stated, "The addition of these extraordinary persons to our board continues our efforts to form a team whose members are highly accomplished in areas of strategic importance to the University."

Dr. Dolores E. Cross
Dr. Dolores E. Cross is a nationally acclaimed educator and the former president of Morris Brown College and Chicago State University. Dr. Cross served as President of the GE Fund in 1997 and as the GE Fund Distinguished Professor in Leadership and Diversity at the CUNY Graduate School and University Center. Dr. Cross has received many awards, including the NAACP's Muriel Silverberg Award, the John Jay Award from the New York State Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities, and honorary degrees from Marymount College, Skidmore College, Hofstra University and Elmhurst College. She recently published her autobiography, Breaking Through the Wall — A Marathoner's Story. Formerly, she was the chair of the American Association for Higher Education, vice-chair of Campus Compact, and advisery board member for the Association of Black Women in Higher Education. Currently, she is on the board of the Institute for International Education, The National Center for Public Policy, and the Field Museum. Dr. Cross earned her B.S. from Seton Hall University, M.S. from Hofstra University and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Joan S. Girgus has served as a faculty member, department chair, and senior administrator at Princeton University, as director of a national program in science education for The Pew Charitable Trusts, and on a number of committees and boards in higher education. She currently is Professor of Psychology at Princeton University. Dr. Girgus has served on the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Higher Education and Sarah Lawrence College, where she was vice-chair and chair of the Board. She also is a trustee of McCarter Theatre, the Princeton Ballet Society, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Dr. Girgus received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York City.

John J. Gutleber is the president and chief executive officer of Castagna Realty. A native Long Islander, he attended St. Anthony's High School and Adelphi University, where he received his B.B.A. in 1968 and M.B.A. in 1970. From 1972 to 1988, Mr. Gutleber worked at Marine Midland Bank, where his career advanced to the point at which he was in charge of Real Estate Lending in New York State, New Jersey, and for international clients. In 1988, Mr. Gutleber left Marine Midland to become the president of Castagna Realty Company, Inc., a real estate development and management firm. He was given the additional title of chief executive officer in 1999. Mr. Gutleber is on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation, the Real Estate Institute at C.W. Post, and Abilities, Inc. of the National Center for Disability Services. Mr. Gutleber has received many awards and honors, including the Brotherhood Award by the National Conference of Christian and Jews and Adelphi University's 2001 Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Kenneth A. McClane, Jr.
Kenneth A. McClane, Jr. is W.E.B DuBois Professor of Literature at Cornell University. He has been a Visiting Professor at Colby College, Williams College, Washington University (St. Louis), and Luce Distinguished Professor at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. Professor McClane, born in New York City, completed all of his college education at Cornell University, including his A.B. (1973), his M.A. (1974), and his M.F.A. (1976). He is the author of seven poetry collections, and a volume of personal essays. His poetry and essays have appeared in many anthologies and his essay "Walls" was selected for The Best American Essays 1988 and The Best American Essays (College Edition) volumes. Professor McClane won The Antioch Review Award for Distinguished Prose in 2002. He has published over 300 individual poems in many of the nation's leading literary journals. Presently, Professor McClane serves on the Board of Directors of the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and is a member of the Presidential Search Committee charged to find a successor to Cornell University President Hunter Rawlings III.
