Adelphi Presents Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell
O'Connell will speak on "Resolving the Shortage of Nurses in New York State"

Garden City, NY
October 16, 2002

Dr. Robert A. Scott is pleased to present the President's Series on Critical Issues at Adelphi University. The breakfast series provides students, scholars, and distinguished guests with a forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national, and global topics, such as the environment, health, politics, law, and government regulations. The fall 2002 series features three leading elected officials: Senator Dean G. Skelos, Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi. The presentations will begin at 8:00 AM in Adelphi's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. These events are open to the public but reservations are required. Contact the Office of University Advancement at 516.877.3697 for more information. A light breakfast will be served.
Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell, R-Westbury, the only Registered Nurse in the Legislature, will speak on "Resolving the Shortage of Nurses in New York State". Assemblywoman O'Connell will address the issue of what the state needs to put money into nursing education and nursing scholarships, and what nurse academics need to study and document health care concerns. Her address is particularly appropriate for the University as the Nursing School celebrates its 60th anniversary next year.
Dr. Robert A. Scott has been president, chief executive officer, and professor of anthropology and sociology at Adelphi University since July 2000, bringing to the century-old liberal arts and professional programs of Adelphi a modern philosophy of engagement with businesses, communities, civic groups, schools, and non-governmental international organizations, thus enriching the University's opportunities for teaching, learning and service, both on the campus and off.
Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Science, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
