Adelphi University Presents Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi
"Nassau County — the road to recovery"

Garden City, NY
October 25, 2002

Dr. Robert A. Scott is pleased to present the President's Series on Critical Issues at Adelphi University. The breakfast series provides students, scholars, and distinguished guests with a forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national, and global topics, such as the environment, health, politics, law, and government regulations. Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi's presentation will begin at 8:00 AM in Room 201 of Adelphi's Ruth S. Harley University Center, One South Avenue, Garden City. These events are open to the public but reservations are required. Contact the Office of University Advancement at 516.877.3697 for more information. A light breakfast will be served.

County Executive Thomas Suozzi's address is particularly appropriate for a University so engaged in the Nassau County community. Adelphi hosts the breakfast on the day before the local elections and five days after County Executive Suozzi signed the budget and multiyear plan that Democrats in the Nassau Legislature approved by a 10-9 vote Monday. The approval of the budget and the longer-range plan was a victory for County Executive Suozzi, a Democrat who took over on Jan. 1 promising to solve the fiscal crisis he inherited from the prior Republican administration. Since 2000, Nassau has been operating under a state-imposed fiscal review board and with state aid, which is estimated to be more than $70 million next year.

Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi is available for interviews.

Dr. Robert A. Scott has been president, chief executive officer, and professor of anthropology and sociology at Adelphi University since July 2000, bringing to the century-old liberal arts and professional programs of Adelphi a modern philosophy of engagement with businesses, communities, civic groups, schools, and non-governmental international organizations, thus enriching the University's opportunities for teaching, learning and service, both on the campus and off.

Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Science, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
