Christopher Lyndon-Gee Conducts First Concert at Adelphi University
AU's Symphony Orchestra to challenge and delight music lovers on December 9th

Garden City, NY
December 2, 2002

Adelphi University is proud to announce its Symphony Orchestra's first concert under new conductor Christopher Lyndon-Gee on Monday December 9th at 8 PM in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom. Lyndon-Gee, who comes from many years as Principal Conductor of orchestras in The Netherlands, Germany and Australia, and over thirty award-winning CD recordings, recently joined Adelphi as new Associate Professor of Music.
His December 9th Adelphi program will mix the classic greats including Mozart's Fortieth Symphony with the rarely heard masterpiece "The Death of Cleopatra" by Hector Berlioz, soprano soloist Janna Baty; and novelties like "Music Dolorosa" (a work written in memory of his sister) by the 57-year-old Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, a name still very new in the USA, but already hailed as a modern master in Europe.
The renowned British composer promises "ear-sharpening programming" and has commented that the programs of the major orchestras, even in nearby Manhattan, seem so burdened by their multi-million-dollar budgets that they tend to play safe with an unrelieved, rarely imaginative diet of well-worn classics. Future plans for Music at Adelphi are even more ambitious, and Lyndon-Gee intends to use the talents of students and the community to give the commercial orchestras a run for their money with music lovers who want to be challenged, as well as delighted. Lyndon-Gee's April 2003 program will introduce to American audiences the innovative Finnish composer Rautavaara, whose large output shows a variety of stylistic resource and who has written in many genres. So Lyndon-Gee will present the extraordinary "Cantus Arcticus -- Concerto for Birds and Orchestra" along with Bruckner's monumental Fourth Symphony.
