Adelphi University Receives Microsoft Grant

Garden City, NY
January 8, 2003

Drs. Whalen and Fiorentino, Adelphi University's School of Education, are recipients of a Microsoft Innovative Teachers Program, a grant providing software licenses to build national networks of school-university partnerships. The Microsoft grant provides approximately $60,000 in software licenses and support.

The Innovative Teachers program's goal is to build a national network of Universities with Schools of Education and School Districts that work together to improve teacher education and student learning through the use of technology. Drs. Whalen and Fiorentino will work with Garden City health and physical education teachers on how to incorporate technology into their teaching and how to get students to use technology. In addition Adelphi student-teachers will be able to view classrooms in Garden City (via internet connections provided for free by Adelphi and the multimedia classroom Adelphi built for Garden City) from on campus and have Garden City teachers view the videos to improve their teaching.

Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Science, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,000 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
