Adelphi University Celebrates Black History Month

Garden City, NY
February 5, 2003

Adelphi University is pleased to present a series of events in honor of Black History Month. The events, which are hosted in part by student run organizations, are designed to enrich the community through the education and celebration of black culture, with Professor Hugh Wilson's "The Black Presence In Civilization: At Home and Abroad" as the compelling centerpiece in the University Center Gallery.

First observed in 1926, Black History Month was instituted by the Association for Study of Negro Life and History founder Carter Goodwin. Goodwin chose February out of respect for Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass who were both born in that month.
