Anna Deavere Smith Delivers Lecture at Adelphi University
"Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change"

Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Anna Deavere Smith to campus on Monday February 10, 2003, to deliver the William E. Simon Lecture in American Civilization and Values. Co-sponsored by the Adelphi University International Initiatives Committee, Ms. Deavere Smith’s presentation will present "Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change," and the Lecture is free and open to the public.

Hailed by Newsweek as "the most exciting individual in the American theatre," playwright and performance artist Anna Deavere Smith uses her singular talents to explore issues of race, community, and character in America. Among her accomplishments are two Obie Award-winning one-woman plays: Twilight: Los Angeles 1992 and Fires in the Mirror. She has appeared in numerous films, including Dave, Philadelphia, and The American President. Currently, she plays National Security Adviser Nancy McNally on NBC’s The West Wing and appeared in a recurring role in the acclaimed ABC series, The Practice.

As an author and actor, Anna Deavere Smith has applied her distinguished body of work that explores issues ranging from the riots in Los Angeles sparked by the infamous Rodney King verdict to her personal journey through life. As a tenured professor at New York University, her teachings extend from classes in the Tisch School of the Arts’ Performance Studies and Art and Public Policy Departments to the NYU School of Law. With her resonant voice in the fields of communication and civic dialogue, "Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change" promises to be a memorable lecture.
