Adelphi University Presents the John Hope Franklin Lecture with Dr. Linda Gordon
"Kidnapping The Orphans: A Tale from the Wild West"

Garden City, NY
February 10, 2003

Adelphi University is pleased to present a lecture by Dr. Linda Gordon on Wednesday, February 12, 2002 at 8:00 pm in The University Center Ballroom. The lecture, entitled "Kidnapping The Orphans: A Tale from the Wild West," will be free and open to the public, and represents this year's John Hope Franklin Lecture. It serves as part of a multitude of events at Adelphi to celebrate Black History Month and is sponsored by The Center for African American & Ethnic Studies Programs.
This year's lecture features Linda Gordon, author of The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction. Dr. Gordon has specialized in examining the historical roots of contemporary social policy debates, with particular attention to gender and family issues. Her books on birth control, family violence, and the history of the welfare program have won multiple awards, and her most recent work, Dear Sisters, offers an historical introduction to the women's movement of the 1960s.
CAAESP, as it is euphemistically called is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, and with this remarkable achievement, commemorates Adelphi’s commitment to diversity in Black History Month. With an expanded scope that is inclusive of all ethnic groups of color, CAASEP established the John Hope Franklin Distinguished Lecture in 1987 to "honor the academic accomplishments of Professor John Hope Franklin, the noted historian."
Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island.
