Garden City, NY
March 13, 2003

Adelphi University is pleased to present the first Orientation and Workshop for Fair Play Coordinators on Wednesday March 26 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom. The event is the first to address issues emanating from Nassau County passing the "Fair Play" Law last October.
Scheduled presenters for the event include Warren D. Breining, MSW, Director of Athletes Helping Athletes, Don McPherson, Director of the Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University, Dr. Ron Feingold, BS, M.Ed., Ph.D., Chairman of the Adelphi University Physical Education Department, and Dr. Roger Rees, B.Ed., MA, Ph.D., professor of Physical Education and Human Performance Science at Adelphi.
Topics to discussed at the workshop include:
- A review of the "Fair Play" law, the purpose of which is to give youth coaches the tools and knowledge base with which to engage parents and young athletes on how to keep the sports experience in its proper perspective
- "Life lesson" scenarios with particular attention to coaches and sports parenting
- The establishment of a steering committee to develop "Fair Play" materials
- Identifying elements of training for coaches and parents
Adelphi University has been instrumental in providing the delivery vehicle to promote sportsmanship and teach life lessons to athletes, as stipulated in the Nassau County "Fair Play" Law passed last October:
"The Sports Leadership Institute and Athletes Helping Athletes at Adelphi are excited about our role as a resource to the Nassau County youth sports community in this endeavor," states Warren Breining, Director of Athletes Helping Athletes.
The event is certain to energize the newsworthy debate about the youth sports experience, with violence by parents and an escalating youth sports dropout rate appearing as much on the news pages as in sports at the moment.
