Adelphi University Presents Congressman Gregory W. Meeks
"America and the World - The Balance Between Dominance and Cooperation"

Garden City, NY
March 21, 2003

Dr. Robert A. Scott is pleased to present the President's Series on Critical Issues at Adelphi University, featuring a speech on "America and the World- The Balance Between Dominance and Cooperation" by Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, an alumnus of Adelphi who represents New York's Sixth Congressional District.
The breakfast series provides students, scholars, and distinguished guests with a forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national, and global topics, such as the environment, health, politics, law, and government regulations. The 2003 series features five leading elected officials: Senator Michael Balboni, Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli, Congressman Meeks, and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, and Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman. The presentations will begin at 8:00 AM in Adelphi's Alumni House, Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. These events are open to the public but reservations are required. Contact the Office of University Advancement at 516.877.3697 for more information. A light breakfast will be served.
Congresssman Meeks' address is particularly appropriate for a University so engaged in the international community. Congresssman Meeks serves on the International Relations Committee and its subcommittee on Africa, and the subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, and Adelphi hosts this topical breakfast at a time when America's global role is constantly under scrutiny.
Dr. Robert A. Scott has been president, chief executive officer, and professor of anthropology and sociology at Adelphi University since July 2000, bringing to the century-old liberal arts and professional programs of Adelphi a modern philosophy of engagement with businesses, communities, civic groups, schools, and non-governmental international organizations, thus enriching the University's opportunities for teaching, learning and service, both on the campus and off.
Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Sciences, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,700 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
