Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott Elected to Influential Board of Regional Planning Association

Adelphi University is pleased to announce that its President, Dr. Robert A. Scott, was elected to the Board of Directors of The Regional Planning Association (RPA) at its recent meeting. President Scott brings a unique perspective to a 60-member Board of Directors that sets overall policy and priorities for the Association, having worked for many years in New Jersey and now focusing his energy on Long Island. RPA has been for more than 80 years the nation's most influential independent regional planning organization, taking positions on major current public policy issues in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

In New York, the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan has captivated the public's attention like no planning project in recent memory. Nevertheless, RPA has spearheaded beyond that a renewed tri-state focus on transportation, open space preservation, urban design and social equity that meshes well with the philosophy of the engaged university led by President Scott.

The affiliation between Adelphi, one of the most important higher education institutions on Long Island, and RPA, a storied civic organization, makes perfect sense. Dr. Scott continues to raise the University's profile throughout the region by connecting Adelphi's historic educational strengths with the larger civic community, and the RPA will provide the ideal forum for him to achieve that. Dr. Scott states: "The RPA provides the expertise for developing a comprehensive view of the region and its challenges, including housing, transportation, the environment, and related issues of social justice."

On Long Island, Dr. Scott and Adelphi are at the vanguard of broad coalitions of civic and business interests in campaigns to create powerful constituencies for change. Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Sciences, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through post-doctoral study, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,700 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies as the foundation for rigorous professional preparation and active citizenship.
