Dr. Jacqueline Royster Lectures at Adelphi
"Cultural Hegemony and the Reshaping of Knowledge in the History of Rhetoric"

Garden City, NY
April 7, 2003

Adelphi University is pleased to present a lecture by Dr. Jacqueline Jones Royster on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 8:00 PM in Room 201 of The Ruth S. Harley University Center on the Garden City campus. The lecture, entitled "Cultural Hegemony and the Reshaping of Knowledge in the History of Rhetoric," will be free and open to the public, is sponsored by The Center for African-American and Ethnic Studies Programs (CAAESP) and represents this year's James Baldwin Lecture on Literary and Social Criticism. For more information, please call Denise Bynes, Program Co-Ordinator, at 516.877.4978.
Dr. Royster, Professor of English and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs in the College of Humanities at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, has achieved a national reputation in three complementary areas of interest: the rhetorical history of women of African descent, the development of literacy, and contexts and processes related to the teaching of writing. She has authored many articles and books that illustrate this convergence of concerns in both literacy studies and women's studies.
CAAESP, as it is euphemistically called, is celebrating 32 years, and with this remarkable achievement, is at the heart of Adelphi's commitment to diversity. Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Sciences, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,700 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
