Benefits Children Whose Parents Have Been Deployed by in the US Military

Garden City, NY
April 7, 2003

Adelphi University is pleased to announce that student Samantha Jonas has created a program called "Project Compassion" to help children cope with the difficulties of war.

"Project Compassion" will be holding a toy drive on Friday April 11, 2003 from 12:00-4:00 PM. Both new and used toys will be accepted and then taken the following day to Fort Hamilton Base, in Brooklyn, NY, where they will then be distributed to the families.

"If this gets one child to smile and realize that people are sincerely praying for the safe return of their parent, then my job is done," said sophomore Samantha Jonas, who has been spreading the word throughout campus and local businesses. "The children of the military are often overlooked, which upsets me greatly. They are going through such a hard time. I just want to divert their attention and allow them to see some good in the world," Jonas added.

"Our goal is to prepare students to be informed, active citizens," said Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott. "Samantha is obviously well on her way. We support her fully in this effort."
