Initiates Program in Corporate Social Responsiblity

Garden City, NY
April 24, 2003

Noted Long Island business leader and philanthropist Horace Hagedorn and his wife Amy Maiello Hagedorn recently made a gift of $1 million to Adelphi University. It is the largest gift from a living individual in the school's history. The grant was awarded through the Horace and Amy Hagedorn Fund in the Long Island Community Foundation, a division of The New York Community Trust.

Adelphi will now designate the building that houses the School of Business as the Hagedorn Hall of Enterprise and will inaugurate an annual program on corporate social responsibility named for Mr. Hagedorn. There will be a dedication ceremony on Monday April 28, 2003, from 9:00 AM to noon. After the Dedication Ceremony The New York Times Sunday Magazine columnist Randy Cohen will deliver a speech on "Everyday Ethics" as part of a Symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility in honor of Horace and Amy Hagedorn at 10:00 AM.

Adelphi President Robert A. Scott states: "Horace Hagedorn is a widely respected, innovative business executive in a variety of endeavors, an entrepreneur recognized for his commitment to high ethical standards, and a leading philanthropist whose generous support has aided substantially a diverse group of educational, health, social service and environmental organizations. He and Amy have certainly enhanced the quality of life in the communities of Long Island. We value their friendship and are pleased that they have agreed to allow Adelphi to recognize them in this way."

Adelphi University is planning a ceremony for late April, with The New York Times ethicist Randy Cohen as speaker, and will inaugurate the annual program series in September. The University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,400 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation.
