"The President's Series on Critical Issues"

April 24, 2003

Dr. Robert A. Scott is pleased to present the President's Series on Critical Issues at Adelphi University. The 2003 series features three leading elected officials: Senator Michael Balboni, Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli, Congressman Gregory Meeks, and Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman, whose speech on Thursday April 24, 2003, will address "Nassau County's Finances: Steering Through The Perfect Storm." The presentations will begin at 8:00 AM in Adelphi's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. These events are open to the public but reservations are required. Contact the Office of University Advancement at 516.877.3693 for more information. A light breakfast will be served.
"Nassau County 's Finances: Steering Through the Perfect Storm" is an ideal lecture for a university so engaged in the community. Howard Weitzman, a former mayor of Great Neck Estates and former member of the Nassau County Board of Assessors, was elected as Nassau County's 11th comptroller in November 2001. Comptroller Weitzman's office prepared the 2001 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for which the county was cited by The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for excellence in financial reporting.
Dr. Robert A. Scott has been president, chief executive officer, and professor of anthropology and sociology at Adelphi University since July 2000, bringing to the century-old liberal arts and professional programs of Adelphi a modern philosophy of engagement with businesses, communities, civic groups, schools, and non-governmental international organizations, thus enriching the University's opportunities for teaching, learning and service, both on the campus and off.
Adelphi University, chartered in 1896, was the first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island. Through its schools and programs -- The College of Arts and Sciences, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, University College/ABLE Program, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work -- the co-educational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through post-doctoral study, as well as professional and educational programs for adults. Adelphi University currently enrolls over 7,700 students from 37 states and 60 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies as the foundation for rigorous professional preparation and active citizenship.
