Acclaimed Producer and Nonviolent Conflict Author Jack DuVall to Speak at Adelphi on October 9, 2003

Garden City, NY
September 17, 2003

Adelphi University's International Initiatives Committee will host a lecture by Jack DuVall, founding director of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict and highly regarded television producer and author, on October 9, 2003 at 6:00 PM in the school's Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The lecture, "To End Violence, Struggle for Justice," is free and open to the public.

Mr. DuVall won critical acclaim for his work as executive producer on the Emmy-nominated, two-part PBS television series, A Force More Powerful, which aired in 2000, and the companion book by the same name, which he co-authored. Both examine successful uses of nonviolent power throughout the world in the 20th century and how nonviolent resistance continues to change the world today. He subsequently founded the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict to develop and encourage the use of civilian-based, nonmilitary strategies to establish and defend human rights worldwide.

A veteran television executive and writer, Mr. DuVall developed, marketed, executive-produced, and promoted non-fiction television programming for 16 years. His clients included the Turner Broadcasting System, The Learning Channel, KCET/Los Angeles, and more than 30 other commercial television and non-profit organizations. Previously he was vice president for program resources of WETA, Washington, D.C.; director of corporate relations at The University of Chicago; a political speechwriter; and a counterintelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force. His writing has included speeches for presidential candidates in four national campaigns and poetry published in the Southern Poetry Review and other journals.

Adelphi University's Adelphi's International Initiatives Committee seeks to heighten global awareness through courses and co-curricular activities.
