Adelphi University Named a Non-governmental Organization by the United Nations Department of Public Information

Garden City, NY
September 24, 2003

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the Department of Public Information (DPI) of the United Nations has approved Adelphi University as a non-governmental organization, or NGO, in recognition of the University's commitment to bringing "global awareness of international issues and the United Nations to the university community and the public." Adelphi joins more than 1,500 not-for-profit organizations world-wide working with the United Nations to raise awareness of pressing global issues.
Since 1946, NGO's have played a vital role in the work of the United Nations. These varied and prestigious organizations represent a diverse range of interests, including education, creative arts, affordable and sustainable housing, women's rights, humanitarian aid, conflict prevention, environment, voluntarism, disease prevention, information technology, aging, population, children's rights, disaster prevention and relief, women's health, and peacekeeping.
In recent years, Adelphi has worked with the United Nations to host ambassadors and permanent representatives for lectures and discussions with students and faculty; exhibitions and panel presentations on poverty and health; and is presently working with the World Health Organization on symposiums on global health issues.
"Universities offer unique settings for the exchange of ideas," said Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott. "As an NGO, we can offer our expertise and assistance to the United Nations Department of Public Information and will continue to work with their office to bring to the forefront issues of global concern."
