Adelphi University Celebrates New Residence Hall Opening with Ribbon-cutting Ceremony on October 13
University Adds Housing To Accommodate Growing Enrollment

Garden City, NY

Adelphi University will celebrate the opening of its first new residence hall in 36 years with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 13, 2003 at 12:00 noon at the school’s Garden City, NY campus. The three-story, 60,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility, which opened this fall, features three spacious lounges with Internet connectivity, a large communal kitchen, and 74 student rooms with private bathrooms. Finished on-time and within its $14.5 million budget, the new hall was built to accommodate the University’s growing undergraduate student body, which has increased by 50% in the past five years.
"The hall symbolizes the University's fiscal health, the strength and reputation of our academic programs, and our commitment to making Adelphi a vibrant community for our students and faculty," said Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott. "Not only are we expanding our enrollment, but more students are interested in living on our park-like campus."
Additional building specifications include:
- Architect: Fletcher-Thompson, Inc.
- 74 student rooms, including 6 1-student rooms, 30 2-student rooms, and 38 3-student rooms
- Total Cost: $ 14.5 million, funded through Town of Hempsted tax-exempt bonds, to be paid back over 30 years
- Construction time: 14 months (finished on time and on budget)
- Lower level uses state-of-the art shelving to house Adelphi University Library archives and special collections.
- Environmentally friendly geothermal heating and cooling system
The opening ceremony will start at noon with brief remarks by Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott and Board of Trustees Chairman Steven Fischer.
