Summit to Evaluate Controversial Federal Literacy Mandates and Alternative Approaches

Garden City, NY
September 29, 2003

Adelphi University's School of Education and its advisery board in collaboration with the Long Island Network of Teacher Centers (LINC) is sponsoring the area's first Literacy Summit, titled Scientifically Based Research: How Do We Know What Really Works? What is the Evidence? on November 7–8, 2003 at the school's Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The summit will bring together area professionals with prominent education leaders to evaluate federal literacy requirements and explore alternative approaches to literacy education.

"The literacy provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act have fueled significant controversy among education leaders, practitioners, and parents," said Dr. Carole S. Rhodes, chair of the Department of Literacy and Leadership, Adelphi University School of Education. "As a leader in literacy scholarship and training, Adelphi's School of Education has a crucial role to play in advancing the debate over literacy research and instruction by convening this timely and engaging Literacy Summit."

All educators from preschool through college, other professionals, and parents with an interest in literacy are invited to attend and explore research, theories, and evidence on topics ranging from emergent to adult literacy.
