Adelphi University School of Social Work Addresses the Role of Law Guardians in Domestic Abuse and Child Custody Cases
"In the Best Interest of the Child: Issues and Challenges in Law Guardianship"

As part of its ongoing professional education series, Adelphi University School of Social Work will host "In the Best Interest of the Child: Issues and Challenges in Law Guardianship," a conference on the role of law guardians in domestic abuse and child custody cases, on Friday, November 7, 2003 at Adelphi University Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. Law guardians, family court judges, social workers, advocates, and parents are invited to explore such issues as the effects of domestic violence on child development, research on the experience of abused women, and the legal standard for custody determinations in cases involving domestic violence.
"Unfortunately, domestic violence and its damaging effects on women and children continue to plague the Long Island and metropolitan New York regions," said Dr. Brooke Spiro, dean, Adelphi University School of Social Work. "By convening prominent Adelphi University faculty and area experts at this conference, we hope to help the community address these critical and troubling issues."
Among the conference speakers are prominent lawyers, advocates, and Adelphi University faculty, including:
- Gerri Abelson, R.C.S.W., B.C.D. clinical director of the Interborough Developmental and Consultation Center. Ms. Abelson is a well-known expert and presenter on trauma treatment and secondary trauma and is a consultant to numerous social service, child welfare, and domestic violence programs.
- Roni Berger, Ph.D. associate professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work and consultant to the Jewish Board of Families and Children Services. Dr. Berger has held diverse clinical, administrative, and teaching positions in agencies and in academia.
- Denise Walden Greene, C.S.W., coordinating senior psychologist in the Division on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harlem Hospital Center.
- Lisa Kociubes, C.S.W. supervisor of the Save Families Project and the Domestic Violence Specialist for the Juvenile Rights Division of the Legal Aid Society.
- Susan Lob, C.S.W. Ms. Lobb has over 20 years of experience working with survivors of domestic violence in shelters, non-residential programs, and child welfare agencies.
- Justice Sondra Miller associate justice of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court since 1990 and New York State Supreme Court Judge of the Ninth Judicial District; co-chair of the New York State Family Violence Task Force; and recipient of the Pace School of Law Leadership Award, 2002, and the Rockland County Women’s Bar Association Belle Mayer Zeck Award, 2001.
- Elizabeth Palley, J.D., Ph.D., M.S.W. assistant professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work. Dr. Palley has extensive experience working with domestic violence programs as an attorney and a social worker.
- Ellen Rosenberg, D.S.W., C.S.W. associate professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work. Dr. Rosenberg has extensive clinical experience in medical and mental health agencies and has presented nationally and internationally.
- Lois Schwaeber, Esq. director of legal services, Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Ms. Schwaeber has been working in the field of domestic violence since 1993 and has published several articles on domestic violence issues.
- Harriet Weinberger, Esq. law guardian director for the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department for the past 14 years and former assistant district attorney in Kings County.
