Ambassador Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury to Address Adelphi University on October 21, 2003

"The Importance of Multilateralism to the Developing State in the Global Arena"

Adelphi University's International Initiatives Committee will host a lecture by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, on October 21, 2003 at 3:00 PM in the University's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. The lecture, "The Importance of Multilateralism to the Developing State in the Global Arena," is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

Dr. Iftekahr Ahmed Chowdhury has been Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations since November 2001. He is the currently the Chairman of the Committee on Information and the Chairman of the Second Committee for the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Ambassador Chowdhury has also served as Chairman of the Commission for Social Development, and as Vice-Chairman, Commission on Population and Development at the United Nations.

In his thirty-four year career, he has served as Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva; Ambassador to Qatar; Deputy Permanent Representative in New York; and Counselor in Bonn. Before his assignment in New York, he served as Special Adviser to the Secretary General of United Nations Commission of Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. In 1998, he was awarded a Knight of the Guard Cross of St. Gregory the Great by the Holy See. Dr. Chowdhury has an M.A. and Ph.D. in International Relations from the Australian National University, Canberra.

The International Initiatives Committee (IIC) is a campus-wide group of faculty, administrators and students, charged with infusing courses and campus events with internationalized content. The IIC allows the University to offer dynamic such as its acclaimed Ambassador Series in intimate settings so students, faculty and the public have the opportunity to hear first-hand, global perspectives on issues of international concern.
